I was not really planning to eat at Nando's but it was one of the few restaurants still open at that time in Bugis. I blame the shops for losing sense of time. A family." From its dictionary meaning, to be a part of this subset of a community- also called a fandom- means that you become a member of a group with a shared love for a particular interest. Be it food or pop culture, fandom behavior has spanned generations, but it continues to live until now, though in different shapes and forms.

For Shem, she's been a fan of Harry Potter since she first laid eyes on the book and then watched the movies. From thereon, she started collecting Harry Potter merch and even visits Harry Potter studios and such. And even if she has now a daughter daughter of her own, Harry Potter's adventures and going to a magical school remains close to her heart.

"It's a little bit different for me because I grew up reading the book and it's part of my childhood. There are fans who are so dedicated they really keep up to date with everything. I consider myself lowkey simply because I feel like Harry Potter is just part of me- not a trend or something that will pass," explained Shem. "Whenever I have a chance, I make sure to visit Harry Potter-related studios. I still find myself fan-girling when I see items dedicated to it. I buy merch. I guess no amount of adulting will ever erase your love for the book if you are a true blue fan. If I can explain it using a different analogy, it's like having your favorite ice cream flavor when you were a child. You might have grown up, but it still brings you joy."

Felma, on the other hand is a 27 year old who is a fangirl of several KPop groups, and considers herself a poster child of a modern fan. "I've attended several concerts, bought albums, collected photocards, and the like. I think it's just part of the culture of being a KPop fan. There is no shortage of materials for consumption and it's so easy to connect with others with the same interest, so the community is really alive."

"It's not my first time being a fan din. Before, I used to fangirl a lot sa Western boy groups. I made so many friends during my elementary days because of it. Now, it still feels like you are a part of a community. Nag-iba lang yun interest," added Felma. "What I can say though is that once you find your favorite or bias, as we call it in the fandom community, you will stay loyal to it talaga. Different flavors, but same level of dedication and love."

Meanwhile, for twenty-nine year old Joshua, he reconnected with his love for Gundam just two years ago. As a child, he grew up watching the anime TV series Gundam. But it was his gf who ignited his passion for it when she gave him a random box to experiment with. From that one box, he now has a shelf full of models that he has assembled, and even has a dedicated socmed account for his collections and also as a way to connect with other Gundam fans.

"I like the feeling of creating something from scratch. It's the process for me. Also, it's pretty cool to see that other people appreciate what you do, kahit di mo sila kilala."

So what is the common factor between Shem, Felma, and Joshua? For them, it's all about connecting with other people, getting in touch with your childhood, and staying loyal to what you love while creating new memories.

"It's similar to when you enjoy your favorite childhood treat," explains Shem. "You love it when you're young because it brings you happiness and even as you grow up, you still find new ways to appreciate and enjoy it. It's like your comfort food."

All three agree that ice cream might be one of the best example of an iconic comfort food. Spanning generations, the icy treat is something that young and old enjoy equally. These three fans, in particular, share another similarity beyond just being a part of fandom culture: they all love Oreo Ice Cream.

Known as the brand of iconic cookies, Oreo has now set the gold standard for cookies and cream flavor in the world of iced sweets. "I have a sweet tooth talaga. I love Oreo kasi super fun yung the way you eat it. Meron silang twist, lick, and dunk commercials, right? But I'm a big fan of ice cream kahit noong bata pa ako so I remember, when Oreo Ice Cream was first introduced, talagang hinanap ko talaga so I can try," shares Felma.

"When I was younger, I wasn't allowed to eat too many sweets. Naalala ko, pag may natira sa baon ko, sa ice cream talaga ako nag-splurge," said Joshua. "So when I got older and had my own money, I made sure to indulge. Oreo Ice Cream is my favorite because it's creamy and I love the crunch of the little cookies."

"I'm a mom now and I can say Oreo Ice Cream is one of the favorites of my daughter. She's a big fan, so much that we made it as a sort of reward for her every time she does well at school," added Shem. "I love that for her kasi, the same way that I had something reminiscent of my childhood- I love the cookies- I know she'll have Oreo Ice Cream as that for her, too. Parang you're making a new tradition, ika nga."

Similar to fandom culture, Oreo has mastered the art of creating a loyal following for its flavors, thanks to the masterful way it plays with the concepts of 'new' and 'nostalgic.' Iconic for its cookies as it already is, the brand has sustained being a favorite of many by creating other ways to enjoy it.

Oreo Ice Cream is currently available in 1-liter tun, pint, cone, and sandwich ice cream versions. Similar to fans that come in different forms, anyone can surely find a favorite in the way they can enjoy this iconic treat.

You can grab your Oreo Ice Cream treat from leading supermarkets and convenience stores nationwide.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20648715.post-88806336782442706802024-03-15T12:38:00.002+08:002024-03-15T12:38:38.911+08:00RECIPE: TKG's Japanese-inspired Pancakes
I do love cooking especially if it involves preparing delicious meals for my family. Of course, Bubble Tea is also synonymous with Taiwanese snacks such as Chicken Pops and Chicken Chops.

Tien Ma's is just one of the Taiwanese restaurants here in Manila and it was quite full and busy when I got there so that's a sign that the restaurant is well-known for serving delicious food.

Of course, I want to reacquaint myself with Stinky Tofu so it was on top of my list. It yes, it is quite stinky as compared to the first time I tasted it (different restaurant). But I guess that it helps a lot if you're into pungent food like like Bleu Cheese, Durian and such.

And it really does smell 'stinky' so you can imagine being in a close space and the smell might cling to your clothes, haha! But once you get past the olfactory welcome and bite into the crunchy tofu, you'll be surprised by the still soft parts at the center. Dipping it in the accompanying sauce and having a forkful of the pickled vegetables can help mask the scent.

Keelung Crispy Beef Strips is another delicious discovery at Tien Ma. I think lumpiang shanghai is a staple in most "Filipino'themed" celebrations. And these yummy lumpiang shanghai is not complete without dipping it in sweet chili sauce. Then there's sisig which we ordered from Amber's, along with a bilao of Bihon Guisado.

Of course, a balikbayan table spread is not complete without balut! Hahaha. Honestly, I don't eat the whole balut also. I just eat the egg part. Then there's grilled chicken from Mang Inasal which got wiped-out fast, not suprised! We got two Family Fiesta and had them delivered via GrabFood since it is much more convenient.

There's also Crispy Pata, Grilled Boneless Bangus, steamed veggies and a whole lot more which I forgot to picture.

For dessert, the highlight was the birthday cake from Estrel's. Part 7 already. This is my first trip to Boracay this year- 2024 and well, you can't go to Boracay without having good food, right? So here is my Boracay Eats Part 7 adventure! Btw, I am with my balikbayan cousins from Canada.

Starting our Day 1 Boracay trip with Pad Thai and Fish & Chips at Sea Salt Restaurant in Henann Prime Beach Resort. These was brunch because we arrived early and our rooms were not yet available for check-in. Went around D'Mall afterwards and bought cheese and ham at Heidiland before going to Mecasa Hotel.

And just in time for the sunset, I am at my favorite 'Isaw' place in Station 1. Yum! I paired it with Dark Chocolate Coffee from Don Macchiatos, which was pretty cheap at P39! It was also enjoyable to watch the sunset while munching the cheese and ham that I bought from Heidiland.

For Day 2 breakfast, I had Sunny Side-up with Bacon, Toast, Watermelon, and Orange Juice. My cousin, on the other hand was raving about the Ube Champorado at Henann Prime. After a quick dip, we all went to D'Mall to buy more cheese at Heidiland and some sourdough bread. Then my cousins shared an order of Coconut Ice-Cream with Mangoes and Nata de Coco from Mango Mama.

After siesta and another not-so-quick swim, we went to Kasbar for Calamari, Chicken Wrap, and Chicken Wings plus San Mig Light and Iced Calamansi Juice.

Day 3 adventure began at sunrise and Taho! It was chilly and windy at Bulabog Beach while waiting for the sun to rise and having a hot Taho on the beach was a blessing. Of course, I am not skipping breakfast just because I already had Taho. So for today's breakfast, I opted to eat Ham Sandwich, Fries, and Watermelon plus Coffee. My cousins had another round of Champorado though, this time- the chocolate one.

For lunch, I can't resist having Grilled Pecho at JT's Manukan in Bulabog. What I love about JT's Manukan is its consistent taste. We order regularly from their Granda, San Juan City branch. Alas, I do wish they'd start accepting GCash because I am already used to using my eWallet when paying for food or items. *hint* *hint*

Dinner was a special affair, we all dressed-up and went on the long ride to Mama's Fish House in Microtel by Wyndham Boracay. We had a lovely meal of Fish & Chips and Laksa Fried Chicken. The sunset was also lovely in this part of the island.

Day 4 and it's breakfast time again and tis time I had Omelette with ham and cheese from Heidiland. The omelette came with toast and coffee. My cousins already moved to Sur Boracay Hotel by this time but they said that breakfast is not that memorable. For lunch, I had Takoyaki, Fries from Potato Corner, and Jonah's Mocha Shake. Now this is what I call the perfect beach-food! Yum!

For dinner, we walked to The Sunnyside Cafe in Station 1. We got lucky to get a table with a nice sunset view. This was our last night on the island so we wanted another special meal. Ordered Choriburger Pizza, Pumpkin Soup, Champorado (again), Dalandan Juice, and my Dalandan Cold Brew which tasted lit!

Day 5, our van transfer was early because we have an early flight going back so I just ate at the airport. My cousins had another round of breakfast at Sur Boracay although it wasn't memorable as well. Mecasa Hotel was asking if I wanted to eat breakfast but it will just make me sleepy. I did wake up early for the sunrise though and had coffee at Levantin Hotel Boracay. And guess what- Levantin serves super nice cappuccino and there are also a lot of interesting items on the menu. Making mental note to visit this part of the island again, soon!

Related Links:
Boracay Food Guide Part 5
Boracay Food Guide Part 6
Henann Prime Hotel Review
Boracay Hotel and Restaurant Guide
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20648715.post-23282789667167339332024-02-06T15:32:00.001+08:002024-02-06T15:32:16.108+08:00Glico Almond Koka X Auro Chocolate at Orinasu Cafe
Japan's popular Glico's Almost Koka and Auro Chocolate teams-up to create a special pop-up cafe called Orinasu Cafe located at Mitsukoshi BGC.

Orinasu Cafe highlights Filipino and Japanese culture through its handcrafted drinks and treats with Glico Almond Koka and Auro Chocolate team-up. And why not? Because oishii desu ne!

Some of our favorite include:

Salmon Sashimi is very seldom absent when we dine at Japanese restaurants. This is of course packed with rich omega 3 fatty acids which is healthy. Then there's the Agedashi Tofu that my daughter love. Soft silken tofu, lightly fried and placed on a bed of grated radish. Yum! Moving on to another favorite, the spicy crispy shrimps. This is really, really good and perfect if you pair it with sake or a cold glass of Asahi beer.

And because we love salmon and spicy food, we also ordered spicy salmon. Another favorite is the tuna karaage. Chunks of tuna in batter. I prefer squeezing some lemon on the tuna instead of the tartar sauce it comes with. Or maybe a dash of togarashi powder so that added spice.

Serving portions are good for sharing especially if you're ordering several dishes. Then you can just order gohan or in our case, we ordered the udon soup set which comes with rice and pickled vegetables.

MUSASHI-MARU
Top of the Glo, Japan Town
Glorietta 2, Makati City

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20648715.post-20743670727251471212024-01-11T12:54:00.002+08:002024-01-11T12:54:22.828+08:00Three Kings Dinner at Duck & Buvette
We just came for coffee but ended up having dinner at Duck & Buvette.

Duck & Buvette is one of our go-to restaurant when we happen to be in Shangri-La Plaza. I am quite amazed because I am late into the coffee-game but definitely catching up.

Here's our new discoveries so far:

Goppion Caffe is actually a surprise find right in Glorietta. I think they've been there for quite some time but there location is a bit hard to find. Unless of course, you always frequent Jade Garden area or Palm Drive cor West Drive. But the coffee is here really, really good Italian coffee. They also sell beans and coffee grounds.

UCC Mentore is just one of the numerous UCCs around the Metro. We love the affogato and iced coffee here. They also serve delicious meals and sandwiches. We also love the location which is just beside Fairmont Hotel.

Coffee Academics is a Hong Kong coffee brand. We were able to visit their first cafe when it opened in Palanca Street Makati but that was already closed now. Their branches are now in SM Mega, BGC, and Robinson's Magnolia.

Banh Mi Kitchen serves Vietnamese iced coffee, of course. Their ca phe sua da is super, super good! And the banh mi also. We love the branch in Power Plant Mall.

Commune is the only homegrown among this list. It is located in Poblacion, Makati and has been serving not just good coffee, but beans and coffee accessories as well. If you're a love aficionado, then this is your happy place. And they also have two cuddly 'house' cats.

NOTE: This is a super, super late post! I should've posted this last 2022

Related links:

Manila Coffee Crawl Part 1

Tokyo Coffee Crawl Part 1

Edel Sanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06672413343633867052noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20648715.post-52521183421374774512024-01-06T12:00:00.000+08:002024-01-06T12:00:08.274+08:00The Kitchen Goddess' Top 12 Restaurant Picks for 2023 The year 2023 was an interesting one with so many yummy discoveries in new places.

Starting my Twelve Restaurant Picks with 1. Ha Noi Pho, one of the newest Vietnamese restaurant in Poblacion, Makati. It was actually hubby and daughter who dined here when it just opened and we've been a fan since then. Aside from legit-tasting Vietnamese food, they also serve Vietnamese coffee. This is a must-visit if you're craving for Vietnamese food.

Moving on to 2. Gloria Maris in Greenhills. This is my family's go-to for special occasions. We've been dining here since forever! What I like about Gloria Maris is that the food tastes consistently delicious. They also have private rooms for small and large gatherings.

3. I am including Crosta Pizza on my list because why not? Even if they don't have an actual restaurant, but they're pizza is sooooo good! Did I mention that it was even included in the World's List of Pizzas and won Pizza of the Year 2023 for its Cherry Culatello Pizza?

Jumping from pizza to burger, my pick would be 4. Wayback Burger in Tokyo. This is the most savory, juicy, and simply meaty grilled to perfection burger that I have tasted so far. They're Strawberry Shake is also quite good, btw.

Then there's the umami-rich 5. Tomato and Cheese Ramen at Gotemba Station. This was a serendipity find prior to our trip to Gotemba Outlet. I tried other ramen shops in Tokyo that serves tomato + cheese ramen but it doesn't come close. Need to schedule another trip to Gotemba. Sigh!

I am not really fond of katsu's because I find it oily but 6. Tonkatsu Yamabe made me change my mind. This is a popular tonkatsu place in Ueno so be prepared to line-up. But it will be worth the wait, I tell you. Hopping on to 7. Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu for beef katsu. Another yummy discovery that merited a second visit.

Then there's the decades old 8. Ginza Lion Beer Hall in Ginza, Tokyo. I love the spaghetti here so much that I had to back twice. And it's not just the spaghetti, the place will make you feel that you're in a Harry Potter movie. Another Ginza-find and favorite is 9. Tricolore Ginza. We lined-up longer here but thumbs up for the food and ambiance. I even bought some pastries to bring home to Manila.

Now this is funny, we got 'budoled' in Japan, hahaha. But the food was good except that there's a lost in translation moment at 10. Kushi Katsu Tanaka. Full story on the blog soon!

Because we just love Shangri-La Makati, we have to be there when it reopened again last August 8, 2023. We had coffee and pastries at the 11. Lobby Lounge Shangri-La Makati.

Last but not the least, 12. Marcelino Cafe is a delightful surprise on the list. This buffet restaurant at Manila Prince Hotel serves good 'ol comforting food favorites- from Creamy Beef Mushroom, Roast Pork Belly, Mahi-Mahi Curry, and Traditional Pudding!

It was indeed a FEAST-full 2023 for me and my family. There's still so many good restaurants and food finds that didn't make the list but I love them all just the same.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20648715.post-69250901446789436882024-01-04T11:28:00.002+08:002024-01-04T11:28:14.584+08:00 NEW RESTO ALERT: Ya Kun Kaya Toast in One AyalaOne Ayala is fast becoming the latest food hub since it opened late last year. The view was breathtaking and even if the trail was a bit challenging especially if you haven't stretched, the view was really worth the long hike. Not to mention discovering new plants, berries, flowers, etc.

But of course, one of the highlights of that hike was the special lunch that was prepared for us. Prior to lunch, we were at the reforestation site helping clear the weeds and aerating the soil for the young trees. And the two hour or more hike going up, plus the time we spent nurturing the trees took a toll on our body and at that point, we all crave for nourishment. Haha, I'm being dramatic but I'm guessing that's how we all feel. ;)

After about another 30 minutes hike up, we reached this bunker-looking dining area / rest area.

This is the Minalot. It has chicken adobo, eggplant salad, picked onions, cucumber, and tomato. It also comes with a salted egg, and dessert which was also carefully wrapped in banana leaves.

Minalot's chicken adobo tastes good, maybe because they used locally-made vinegar. It doesn't have that sour-acid taste. The meat was also surprisingly tender and really savory. I love how the pickled onion and cucumber adds more flavor to the chicken. The tomato was steamed so that you can easily peel the skin off. As for the eggplant, my companions were raving about it.

Dessert was Biko which looks similar to the kalamay in Northern Luzon. After checking the restaurants, we decided to dine at Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu. It is one of the popular restos in Machida because it has another branch just a few meters away. No kidding. Most of the diners here are locals and ryuugakusei. Btw, Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu has many branches all over Japan and in other countries.

Gyukatsu is beef cutlet served medium rare.
