A happy place full of surprises comes to mind when I hear the word "carnivale," so when I received a Food Tasting invite at Carnivale in S Maison Conrad, I didn't think twice about accepting the invitation.
We were served this fluffy sweet cotton candy while waiting for our food. I haven't had cotton candy in ages so this is really a treat. Also, it is fun to watch the staff make cotton candy and if you're lucky, you get to twirl it on your own. :)
Carnivale is at the second floor of S Maison Conrad in Pasay City. This concept restaurant is from the same group that introduced Locavore.
I had fun checking the tarot card-ish menu. Each dish was printed on a card. How cool! And if you are having a hard time choosing what to order, you can just shuffle the deck, pick a card and give it to the waiter. ;)
French Onion Croquettas, P280. A playful twist to the classic French Onion Soup but in this case, its French Onion Jam. I love how crispy and perfect crust is, not to mention that I find it delicious.
There's the French Onion Jam inside the nacho chip crust, with grated Gruyere cheese and Red Onion Mayo.
Wangus Burger. P360. A sinful marriage of Angus Beef and Wagyu Fat with Tomato Confit, Grated Yellow Cheddar and Onion Relish. The bun is Butter Toasted Brioche. I love the "Wangus" patty because it's very juicy and flavorful, very filling. The bun though is a bit hard, maybe because it is toasted. I like my bread soft, but that's just me. This is good for sharing.
Gravlax with Squid Ink Brioche Bun. I love the cream cheese and smoked salmon (gravlax) and the idea that you can turn it into a delightful burger. Serving portion is good for sharing also. This burger is perfect with a glass of wine but I'm not sure if Carnivale has wine on their menu.
Ferrero, P380. The one on the photo is a mini version though. Serving size is same as the Wangus and Gravlax. I really love this dessert. The Nutella ice cream is sandwich between Gold dusted Profiterole and Sugar Kraklin. It has has some Dark Chocolate Kit Kat Bits- all delicious stuff! What more can I say but thumbs up!
There's a burger though that really, really made me happy (but I forgot to take photo). Its the Mushroom Burger (for vegetarians). It is so good, the mushroom is sweet and tender and juicy. I think its Portobello (sorry, I forgot to ask coz I'm busy munching). Do give that a try, you won't regret it even if you love meat.
Overall dining experience at Carnivale is FUN. The prices though are a bit steep but knowing that you're being served the best ingredients, then the dining experience becomes memorable and worth every penny ... err peso. ;)
